We have been learning about the importance of Matariki over the past month. Matariki is a small cluster of seven stars that appear in late May or early June and is also known as the Maori New Year.
It is a time when friends and family gather together and share kai, stories, waiata and making traditional Maori crafts.
In Kowhai we created these cool stars using a variety of different art techniques and patterns as we learned about what Matariki is and how it is celebrated.
As a school we celebrated Matariki with a hangi.
We invited our school community to join us. A huge thank you to the Couch family for their help and guidance to make this happen. It was delicious.
